Buff Mortar Review

Used as directed, Rutland 63 Fireplace Mortar works great as an adhesive and filler, and as I noted in the title, it is cheap.I looked on line at products in the $100 range, and although I have no idea as to whether or not they would have done a better job, the Rutland product does the job, so why pay 20 times as much?

Rutland warns about filling over 1/4" thick, recommending their casting materials for that use, and I believe I discovered why.When you fire the repair, entraped water turns to steam and causes bubbles in the material.For my purposes this was not a point of concern, but if appearance is important in your repair, pay attention to their warning.Go on line and download Rutland's instruction and information sheets.

Just a point of interest, my repair was to an over 40 year old Kamado, an earthenware Japanese cooker which must have served as a model for the Weber BBQs.Moves of our household over those 40 years cracked the firebox and firering.I have used the Kamado several times since the repair, and all appears to be in good shape.

High temperature resistant, 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, silicate mortar used for joining and repairing of firebrick, masonry to masonry. Joints should be preferably under 1/8" narrow because tis is a high-temperature, ready-mixed product. Use to tuckpoint between firebricks and repair broken firebricks. An air-set mortar requiring heat 1200 degrees Fahrenheit for final cure. When properly dried and firecured it becomes brick-hard and brick-strong.
