CorningWare French White 23-Ounce Oval Dish Review

This size is perfect for cooking those frozen entrees in glass instead of plastic.I just pop the frozen entree (usually a Smart One from Weight Watchers) and cover.Take it to work, put it back in the freezer and heat it according to times on package when I want it.I feel better about heating in glass than plastic with all the bad news about plastics.
I'd like a container a little bigger as well...then I could add a veggie, potato or such to entree.

When I first bought this five years ago, it was after using aluminum macchinettas, which were somewhat fragile and much more temperamental in the quality of brew.It took me a little while to get the amount of grounds, the right grind, the right amount of heat, and amount of water figured out.Once I did, though, I seldom have had better espresso than this.Mine lasted for five years before the stem in the upper tower began to leak, but I traveled extensively and always brought this thing with me to assure that I had good coffee away from home.IT REALLY IS THAT GOOD, which is why I'm replacing it with the exact same model.You probably won't be satisfied with anything else once you taste a perfect brew from this pot.

Avanti : DER201BS Electric Range Review

It's a nice looking little range. We bought it to replace a 30 year old Kenmore. Need the small size to fit in the space between the cabinets in the kitchen and we wanted the smooth top, thinking it would be easy to keep clean. The pretty part is the only good thing about this range. You have to use special cleaner for the top or it will scratch, cast iron skillits are not recomended, and the oven will only go to 400 degrees(no matter what the knob says. You cannot have top and bottom elements going at the same time (in the oven). The large burners don't put out anymore btu's than the small burners and it takes forever to boil a pot of water. The burners cycle on and off in some weird pattern. Needless to say it takes longer to bring any pot or pan to temp. The controls constantly stick in the off position and you have to pull them out and then push them back in to get them to work. The stove arrived without the stainless backsplash/vent and it took almost a year to get it from avanti. We've had this stove over a year now and really cannot think of anything good to say about it, except it's very nice looking. Can't recommend this unit.

Bayou Classic 3016 30-Quart Outdoor Turkey Fryer with Basket and Fry Pot Review

I have long been skeptical of "deep frying" at home.The smell, the mess, the smell...Anyway, I recently decided to throw a fish fry and decided it was time to invest in a fryer.The biggest issue for me in purchasing a fryer was the sturdiness of the burner stand.Besides having the ability to heat 12 quarts of oil, I also wanted a burner stand that would hold the weight of 20 quarts of beer for my homebrewing.I decided on the Bayou Classic.

This Bayou Classic kit came with everything and setup was simple.The burner stand exceeded my expectations for sturdiness and the height was such that when using the 10 quart stock pot, you could place the burner stand on a safe sturdy work surface to elevate it off the ground.I plan on also using this burner with my wok.The burner was able to bring the oil to temperature in approximately 15 minutes.The Fish and Chips turned out great.

Of course when using 350 degree boiling oil, you do not want your weekend fry festival to end with either a trip to your local burn unit or a reason to see if Allstate really has you in good hands.Common sense must prevail and last time I checked, Amazon does not sell that yet.Set your fry area up away from kids, pets and anything that you want to see another day.If you follow that simple advice, all should turn out okay.

Clean up can be best described as "sticky", but in order to get the life out of your aluminum parts, don't skimp.Now that I have tackled fish and chips, I will have to move on to the other "must have" fried foods these days: turkeys, chickens, and Twinkies.I can't wait.

CorningWare French White 16-Ounce Round Dish Review

This handy individual sized casserole is just perfect for the microwave, oven, or storing food in the fridge. I also reccommend the Corning Wear French White 15 oz ovals as well. I use both types when I make a big batch of lazana and place the rest in anindividual casseroles. Then, I have my lunch ready for the next day to heat up! Note that this is not the original pyrocream --instead this is made of stoneware. This stoneware works ONLY in a microwave or regular oven. It does not work on the COOKTOP of a stove. Also note that the newer Corning Ware is of stoneware. The reason that I scored this a 4 and not a 5 is because it is not the original procream and it does not work on the cooktop. You will see more in the excellent BLOG if you look for this in Google called: "What happened to Corning Ware?" This is a real eye opener and I learned much reading this wonderful discussion!

Typhoon Vintage Pink 6-Cup Espresso Maker Review

I've only hadthis a few months. It makes a nice cup of coffee but the pink enamel stains easily and is already chipping off around the spout. It also has a design fault as the lower tip of the handle tends to melt from the heat of the gas stove as the coffee perks.

Hario Buono Drip Kettle Review

I make coffee in a Chemex 1-3 Cup Coffee Maker and controlling the pour is important. It's almost impossible to control the pour from a standard kettle. The Buono drip kettle allows very good control and really makes a difference in the coffee. I boil water in a kettle then transfer to the Buono and let the water sit for one minute which gives it time to cool to the right temp (about 92C). I believe it's OK to boil the water in the Buono but I don't. I make sure to dry it when I'm done and only use it to pour. So far, it's been excellent.

Buff Mortar Review

Used as directed, Rutland 63 Fireplace Mortar works great as an adhesive and filler, and as I noted in the title, it is cheap.I looked on line at products in the $100 range, and although I have no idea as to whether or not they would have done a better job, the Rutland product does the job, so why pay 20 times as much?

Rutland warns about filling over 1/4" thick, recommending their casting materials for that use, and I believe I discovered why.When you fire the repair, entraped water turns to steam and causes bubbles in the material.For my purposes this was not a point of concern, but if appearance is important in your repair, pay attention to their warning.Go on line and download Rutland's instruction and information sheets.

Just a point of interest, my repair was to an over 40 year old Kamado, an earthenware Japanese cooker which must have served as a model for the Weber BBQs.Moves of our household over those 40 years cracked the firebox and firering.I have used the Kamado several times since the repair, and all appears to be in good shape.

Kitchen Essentials® from Calphalon® Hard Anodized Nonstick Double Griddle Review

Calphalon has become my favorite brand of cookware. Although I prefer the company's traditional hard-anodized professional line, I bought this nonstick double griddle because Calphalon does not make a fully hard-anodized griddle. The rectangular pan easily covers two burners and is great for making pancakes, grilled sandwiches, eggs - whenever you need a large flat cooking surface.

I have a gas range, and I find that the heat does not distribute as evenly as I'd like, though it's adequate for most cooking purposes. Cooks with electric ranges might get better results with their more radiant burner system. The uneven heating is in part due to the pan's design since it spans two burners with obviously a gap between two heat sources. However, you can't beat this useful griddle for cooking of a batch of pancakes or other family meals more quickly than you would with one pan. The nonstick surface has proven to be durable, and the pan itself is extremely sturdy.

If you are looking for a griddle and often have to juggle two pans to accommodate one recipe, this product is for you. Make sure you have a large enough storage area for it, though, as you don't want your other metal pans to scratch the non-stick surface. (I store mine on its side in one of my deeper cabinets.) From handle to handle, the pan measures 23"; it is about 11" wide.

As griddles go, this is one of the best. Don't settle for a thin-walled one if you are a serious cook.

Range Kleen Dryer Vent Kleening Kit, 3-Piece set Review

I clean my dryer lint trap with every load, but over time, the trap starts sticking further and further up and lint beyond the reach of anyone's fingers (with the possible exception of E.T.'s) sifts down into the inevitable, yet dangerous, depths of the dryer's most private parts.

I've tried skinny little bottle brushes and coating a hanger with disgusting sticky junk that I found under the fridge, but nothing would pull out the lint.

But I digress.This dryer cleaning kit is great.I haven't used all the parts yet, but the long wiggly brush is worth its weight in missing socks and fire extinguishers.I removed the trap and gently inserted the prickly-tickly brush into the dryer's darkest, most private parts, and it responded, slowly at first, releasing just a few drifts of soft grayish puffs.

Then, as I probed deeper and deeper, moving in and out, my dryer began to coat the long thrusting brush with unspent mounds of lint, layer upon layer of varying colors and textures held at bay so long that the poor dryer nearly screamed with relief as it opened up to my brush. It thrust ever deeper and harder as I sensed release coming, and finally, it burst the last vestiges of resistance and found the wall vent.

Slowly, I pulled the brush free of the dryer for the last time that morning, and laid it aside.Then, and only then, did I finally use my finger to press that little black button and turn my dryer on.

Whew. Yeah, that brush is definitely a five-star. I hope it's that good for you too.

Medelco 12 Cup Stainless Steel Eurostyle Carafe Review

We finally purchased this stainless steel carafe after breaking (DOH!) two glass ones (while washing and rinsing in the kitchen sink).

Who wants to be without their morning cup of joe? Not us!

The inconvenience of not being able to see how much coffee is left in the carafe is of no comparison when you can't even make your coffee. Fits our old reliable Braun 4092 perfectly. If anything, I wish the steel was just a tad bit thicker but it works great as is.

I got some of these Mayan Resinwood sticks and a magnesium fire starter at a Sporting Goods Show a few years back.

Shave a few splinters off the chock-full of resin sticks, strike with the magnesium striker, and you have a campfire going quickly.If you have trouble finding burnable material, one of the Mayan firesticks will burn strong and last quite a long time. They came in handy more than a few times on damp and wet conditions while camping with my sons' Scout Troop.These Mayan sticks are FAR superior to Georgia or Alabama fatwood.I bought mine in Tennessee!

Medelco 4-Cup Permanent Basket Coffee Filter Review

This filter wss purchased for use in a Mr Coffee DR4.

It replaces a permanent filter from Mr Coffee that had a plastic bottom with the mesh only on the sides.

The Medelco filter has mesh on the bottom as well as the sides, thus the water runs through the filter too fast resulting in weak coffee.

The only suggestion from Medelco's help line was to use more coffee!

High efficiency 2 burner gas cooktop(Natural Gas), GCT2-53CN Review

We purchased this stove for a kitchenette we were putting in our home office. It's a very nice little stove with electric ignition. It functions well, it was easy to install and burns very cleanly. We've had it for 3 months and used it lightly, and everything is great.

Stylistically, it's nice to look at as well. Overall I would recommend this product for someone who needs a light use two burner gas stove.

Here are the (minor) things that keep me from giving it a 5 star rating:

1) The on/off gas knobs are a little too close to the main burner. It would have been better if the main (larger) burner was in the rear. The actual layout won't burn the hair on your fingers or anything, but it just feels a little tight/warm compared to a full-size stove.
2) The electric ignition is "manual" - you turn on the gas and hold down the knob in order to light the gas. When the gas is lit, you release the knob. I would have preferred for the more normal system where you turn the knob all the way to maximum and the electric ignition goes on and then you back the knob off to turn the electric ignition off.
3) The electric ignition must stay on for a few seconds otherwise the gas flame goes right out. This period is noticeably longer than other electric ignition gas stoves I've used.

These three complaints are very minor, and maybe other people wouldn't even notice (or perhaps prefer the way at least #2 and #3 behave now versus the alternatives).

This Copco teakettle is easy to pick up when hot, as it has a cool handle.Even the lid can be removed without burning a finger when the kettle is hot, which is handy for refilling right away.However, the manufacturer recommends using only medium heat, so it takes much longer to heat water than I was used to.The whistle is loud enough to hear from another room.When the water level gets low, the kettle does not pour a straight stream, and water can splash outside the pouring target area.I like that there is no seam around the bottom, as that is where my last kettle began to leak.

I ordered this set to compliment my dishes in the Chutney pattern.I plan to use them for baking an serving and also the larger of the two as a tortilla warmer, which matches my dinner ware.The cost of buying a ceramic tortilla warmer was more expensive then buying this pair altogether.I love CorningWare products.They are so dependable and versatile.I have used them for over 37 years, since I was first married in 1971.I still have the first set I bought way back when.These bake and serve pieces keep the food warm a lot longer at the table and look great on the table as well.
